Purpose
Quirkos is a qualitative data analysis software package designed to facilitate the straightforward, visual, and accessible exploration and interpretation of textual and multimedia qualitative data. Its core objective is to provide researchers, particularly those new to qualitative methods, with an intuitive tool that accelerates coding and theme development while allowing real-time visualisation of connections and patterns. It targets social science research and other disciplines reliant on qualitative data by simplifying the traditionally complex and time-consuming process of qualitative data analysis without sacrificing methodological rigour.
Release Date
Quirkos was launched in 2013 by a UK-based team focused on creating a user-friendly computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). Over the past decade, it has evolved with iterative updates, including a major recent release of Quirkos 3 in early 2025. This latest version enhanced performance and reporting capabilities while offering both offline desktop and cloud-based web app access. It maintained affordability and visual simplicity as central design principles throughout its development.
Features
Quirkos offers a compact yet powerful selection of features tailored for qualitative research:
Student Usability
Quirkos is particularly acclaimed for its ease of use and accessibility for students and novice qualitative researchers. The software’s design emphasises visual, tactile interaction with data, replacing intimidating code trees with immediately understandable ‘bubbles’ that update in real time as coding proceeds. This lowers the learning curve and helps students grasp analytic processes more quickly. The inclusion of tutorials, free trial licences, and flexible pricing addresses educational accessibility, and the cloud platform facilitates collaboration in student group projects and distance learning setups.
