Hyrax (Samvera Ecosystem): Multi-Tenant Open-Source Repositories

Purpose

Hyku and Hyrax are open-source digital-repository solutions developed under the Samvera Community to support flexible, scalable, and multi-tenant digital-collection management. They are built on Ruby on Rails and designed for institutions seeking cloud-style repository hosting for multiple departments or consortia.

Their purpose is to deliver a customisable, sustainable framework for managing institutional and consortial digital assets—ranging from research data to cultural-heritage materials.

Release Date

The Samvera (formerly Hydra) Project began in 2008, with Hyrax emerging as a core application in 2016 and Hyku as its hosted, multi-tenant variant in 2017. Development is coordinated by the Samvera Community, supported by organisations such as Lyrasis and numerous research libraries.
