Purpose

Evergreen ILS is an open-source integrated library system designed to support multi-library networks in managing bibliographic records, holdings, circulation, acquisitions, and public access catalogues. Its central aim is to enable large-scale, multi-institutional resource sharing without reliance on proprietary software, thereby enhancing collaboration among consortia and reducing vendor lock-in. The software emphasises scalable performance for networks of libraries, sophisticated circulation and holding management, and interoperability with standard library protocols. By providing a flexible, community-driven platform, Evergreen seeks to empower libraries to tailor workflows to local and regional needs while sustaining broad interoperability with external systems, repositories, and discovery layers.

Release Date

Evergreen originated in the mid-2000s as an open-source response to the needs of statewide and multi-library consortia. Initial development emerged within the PINES consortium in Georgia, United States, with subsequent releases expanding community contributions and international adoption. The project has progressed through regular updates and improvements driven by the global Evergreen community, with major releases and incremental refinements addressing performance, accessibility, and standards compliance. The project’s open development model means new features and security enhancements are introduced continuously, with formal release notes guiding institutions in planning upgrades and migrations.
