Purpose
Evergreen ILS is an open-source integrated library system designed to support multi-library networks in managing bibliographic records, holdings, circulation, acquisitions, and public access catalogues. Its central aim is to enable large-scale, multi-institutional resource sharing without reliance on proprietary software, thereby enhancing collaboration among consortia and reducing vendor lock-in. The software emphasises scalable performance for networks of libraries, sophisticated circulation and holding management, and interoperability with standard library protocols. By providing a flexible, community-driven platform, Evergreen seeks to empower libraries to tailor workflows to local and regional needs while sustaining broad interoperability with external systems, repositories, and discovery layers.
Release Date
Evergreen originated in the mid-2000s as an open-source response to the needs of statewide and multi-library consortia. Initial development emerged within the PINES consortium in Georgia, United States, with subsequent releases expanding community contributions and international adoption. The project has progressed through regular updates and improvements driven by the global Evergreen community, with major releases and incremental refinements addressing performance, accessibility, and standards compliance. The project’s open development model means new features and security enhancements are introduced continuously, with formal release notes guiding institutions in planning upgrades and migrations.
Features
Evergreen provides a comprehensive feature set designed for large, distributed library environments:
Cataloguing and holdings: Support for MARC records, unified catalogue management, and flexible holding structures to accommodate multi-branch and shared collections.
Circulation: Complex loan rules, patron management, fines, holds, renewals, and permission configurations suitable for consortial operations.
Serials and acquisitions: Management of periodicals, subscriptions, budgeting, and order workflows across multiple libraries.
Public catalogue and discovery: A user-facing OPAC designed for intuitive discovery across distributed holdings, with options for customised interfaces and branding.
Patron management and authentication: Robust user accounts, authentication methods, and role-based access controls for staff and patrons.
Reporting and analytics: Advanced reporting capabilities for usage statistics, collection assessment, and compliance monitoring.
Interoperability: Protocol support for integration with external systems (e.g., SIP2, Z39.50/SRU), and compatibility with standard metadata formats.
Administration and configuration: Centralised governance over workflows, permissions, and policy enforcement across a network.
Cloud and on-premises deployment: Flexible hosting options to suit diverse institutional needs, governance structures, and budgetary constraints.
Evergreen’s design prioritises scalability, resilience, and collaborative management of shared resources, which makes it particularly well-suited to statewide or regional library systems and large academic consortia.
Student Usability
